Grant Puts Smiles on the Faces of Kids During the Summer
The San Antonio Food Bank was a recipient of a Child Hunger Program grant from Sam’s Club to increase the reach of our BackPack program throughout the year. There are 2.6 million Texas children who receive free or reduced lunch meals through the National School Lunch Program and this number continues to grow. The risk of children going hungry is greater when school is out because they lose access to regular daily school breakfasts and lunches.
As a result of the funding received from Sam’s Club, the San Antonio Food Bank was able to expand the number of food packs distributed by integrating the Summer Food Service Program and providing increased access to nutritious food to low-income children. The San Antonio Food Bank is providing more access to nutritious food by working with Summer Food Service Program feeding sites to distribute food packs during the summer to children at risk of going hungry over the weekend, vacation, or holiday breaks. By extending the BackPack program throughout the year we have made a great impact on hungry children. Children are provided with a free nutritionally balanced meal for each day that the site is closed. For example, a site that is approved to serve lunch Monday through Friday will provide two lunches (food packs) that will be handed out to children on a Friday before the weekend.
Special thanks to Sam’s Club for helping fight hunger and feed hope in our community!
