We Are Growing!
Things are growing at the San Antonio Food Bank. We are currently in the process of doubling our warehouse capacity to increase the amount of food we provide to families and children. The Southwest Texas area is large and the Food Bank wants to make sure that we have the facilities to accommodate those who need our help. The walls on our new facility have gone up and the building is starting to take shape.
The San Antonio Food Bank’s five-acre community garden is being relocated to a more permanent space on the property. Our on-site farm will increase access to locally grown produce for our three community kitchens, two farmers markets, and more than 500 agencies that use produce from the Food Bank every week.
In addition, the expansion will include additional parking and an outdoor pavilion. The additional parking will alleviate the parking shortage for the 1,000 volunteers that come through our doors each week.
Being “green” is second nature to the Food Bank, so through our expansion we have added some environmentally friendly updates. The expansion will incorporate an electricity generating wind turbine, solar panels and rain-water harvesting systems to offset the consumption of power from conventional sources with renewable sources of energy. Keeping the environment healthy is just one of the many benefits that will stem from these changes.
With our expansion we will be able to reach more families in need than ever before!
